Film Night

Thursday evenings have taken a lovely turn of late.

My eldest daughter has been staying over and our Thursday evenings have turned into Film Night where we watch older pictures that she wouldn’t otherwise be aware of.

So far, we’ve had Apollo 13, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and this evening was Slumdog Millionaire.
Apollo 13 had her on the edge of her seat throughout and Ferris Bueller really tickled her. Isn’t it a lovely feeling when something you cherish and hold so dear brings happiness and laughter to another?

As for Slumdog Millionaire, she was in for the ride all the way, quite rightly blanching at the moment poor Arvind is blinded and guiltily laughing as Jamal, covered in human excrement asks for an autograph from film star; Amitabh.

I’ve not watched the film in a long time but it took me right back to my first viewing. It’s a truly wonderful film that grabs you from the get go and brilliantly undercuts it’s own denouement with Jamal becoming a very rich and happy man, regardless of the 20 million rupees he’s just won.

This is why film, the arts and freedom of expression in general is so important, because in a world hell bent on tearing itself apart, and desperately wanting in compassion and kindness, we need reminding of that which is truly important.

Oh, and the picture? We cooked our tea together for the first time and it was delicious.
