Solved

It was only a small mystery - I'd wondered if the almond tree was still bearing fruit here.  Well, it tries, but the squirrels have already torn the drupes (that's what the green fruits are called, I've learned) from the trees and scattered the remains everywhere. The nuts won't be ready until July or August, so the poor tree doesn't stand a chance. There are a few left still (extra) but it's such and old and sprawling tree, and so close to the fence and the roof, I can't think of any way I could really protect them. The bees were busy on the apples today - the squirrels love to take a bite of one and then throw the rest away, but that tree is so prolific we can afford to share them.
