Getting warm

Having now got all the tree trunks from forest and fields onto our property, now need to begin the task of sorting it.

As it is mainly hardwood (beech/ash), I will be sawing the trunks in 33cm lengths & then splitting them. That way can manhandle them more easily and they should dry more quickly. Softwood such as last year's spruce is easier split in 1m lengths to dry & then sawn.

Gets into quite a logistical nightmare as one needs to pile it up according to the age (how dry it is) and also the type. Spruce is actually better for the type of fire we have but a certain amount of hardwood useful when one wants it to burn for a longer time unattended. Also need to stack it so that you can get to it when needed, often with 50cm of snow to wade through.

Today's load can probably be used in winter 2021/2, the wood from yesterday might have to wait until 2022/3. Yes, I am optimistic!
