Between fen and mountains

Lancaster memorial

Today, as it is the VE Day, I cycled out to the Lancaster bomber memorial site for my daily exercise, a very pleasant ten mile ride around the lanes. The details of the crash are recorded on the plaque in the extra. There were some fragments of metal displayed on the memorial as the farmer is still ploughing up bits all these years on. There have been commemorative events and street parties today. I think the time has come for the day to be remembered In the same way as Armistice day. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the generation that defended freedom and the sacrifices they made but the idea of celebrating victory 75 years on is in my view becoming outdated. There are no real victors in wars, everybody suffers.
