Life in Sunny Dubai

The Flipping Saj Man

We've had quite a day today! End of the month so a bit of banking/bills to sort out. We then went out for a drive to give Gs car a run (it let her down yesterday when she tried to get to work) but mainly to keep out of our cleaners way as he likes the place to himself.

Ended up in Ace (Ace is the place) buying a BBQ for the balcony, a fold-up table AND a magic sponge by 3M which erases any marks on hard surfaces (like walls). Even children's drawings! Had to try it out as soon as I got home and guess what - IT WORKS! That really put a smile on my face.

We had already planned to make a visit to the Night Souk as Dubai Shopping Festival 2013 is rapidly coming to its end. Located along the Creek, it is also where the daily fireworks display is set off from. The souk was... um... nothing to write home about apart from a real London Red Double Decker bus parked there. We browsed the stalls, then waited for the fireworks except tonight of all nights - there weren't any!! Apparently the weather was less than ideal! Hmmm...

Walked a bit more and saw this man... It was his "oven" that initially caught my eye. He was making what looked like crepes except the dough mix is slightly different, and it is called Saj - more like roti. Here he is preparing one for us.

We then sat to eat our saj and this guy decided to have his break and sat next to us, striking up a conversation (in Arabic) with Geraldine. The usual opening line in Dubai is "where are you from?" [Syria/UK] He asked if there might be demand for his Saj making skills in the UK and if he could set up a successful business there. G said yes. He then said he didn't know anyone at all in England in order to gain entry. G didn't say anything - she's had this conversation a hundred times, but was surprised at his next remark - which was to another [Arab] man sitting there. He said, "If you marry me, I can get into the UK on your passport!!" CHEEK!

G understands Arabic. She was annoyed, but handled it really well... he was embarrased. His break quickly came to an end. Good job I got the picture before. I shall withhold my comments!
