Lucas

This male Pileated Woodpecker is a frequent diner at the BarkButter feeder. We've been seeing him on a regular basis for about a year and a half. His unusual coloring is referred to as 'Leucism', a condition which causes a partial loss of pigmentation in skin, scales, hair or, as in this case, feathers. Unlike 'albinism, it can cause a reduction of several types of pigment not just melanin. If you're curious, here's a Wikipedia article with more info and some interesting photos and links! Think I'll name him Lucas!
