Columbine (Aquilegia)

The genus name is derived from the Latin for eagle (aquila), because of the shape of the flower petals, said to resemble an eagle's claw. You can see the claw effect in this photo. The common name "columbine" comes from the Latin for "dove", due to the resemblance of the inverted flower to five doves clustered together. They seed prolifically - easy to transplant young specimens to pots or new locations in the garden.
