Windmills

Windmills are a common part of the Dutch landscape, but at this location at Kinderdijk there is a big group of different types of windmill.

Unlike England where windmills where usually for milling flour, here in the Netherlands they are more likely to be used for pumping water, which was the purpose of this group.

The water pumping is long ago replaced by a very large set of Archimedes screw pumps, (see wiki referenceimpressive enough in themselves and the windmills are preserved now for their historical interest.
