Land improvement

The ealry 19th century was the period of land improvemnt in Uist. Until a storm overran the dykes in the 1860s, our bay was closed to the sea by dykes creating almost a hundred acres of arable land.
If you look in the foreground, you can make out the line of what was the dyke at the eastern end.
Our house site was not used at this time but the dwelling of the period was on the lump in front of the current site on what is now an island.
By the turn of the 20th century, our site was the noe used. Presumalby the effort of building a new house outweighed the problems and inconveniences of living on a tidal island.
A glorious day finishing with an al fresco glass of white admiring the now totally strimmed garden.
