Handstand

This was one of those mornings that I dream about over the winter, with classic summer conditions.  The best part was running into Suzanne/Osuzanna.  It wasn't totally random, however.  We both love this location, and we had mentioned in blips that we would try and go today.  Anyway, it gave us a chance to catch up (6 feet apart of course) while still getting our photography therapy.

I saw quite a variety of birds today, although that doesn't mean that I was able to capture them as well as they deserved.  The Indigo Bunting was too far away, the Eastern Wood-peewee was a silhouette against the bright blue sky, and the Yellow-billed Cuckoo was too dark.  Still, I'm happy to have spotted them.

I've seen dragonflies in this position before, but never investigated why.  So today I did a quick google search, and the source of all truth, Wikipedia says:
"The obelisk posture is a handstand-like position that some dragonflies and damselflies assume to prevent overheating on sunny days. The abdomen is raised until its tip points at the sun, minimizing the surface area exposed to solar radiation."

So there we have it.  Enjoy the weekend, and stay safe!
