Green, Green Grass of Home

Recycling collection day today. And not just any old common or garden fortnightly collection of the paper, plastic and glass. Today is also our “new normal, once every four weeks” green bin collection.
Used to be that we got this bin emptied fortnightly as well, but as soon as lockdown occurred, green bin collections were discontinued so they could concentrate on the normal waste collections. Fortunately ours was emptied on the last normal round before lockdown so at least we started with an empty bin.
Which was good because obviously the one thing everybody did during those initial weeks of lockdown was tidy the garden! No DIY stores open so home improvement out of the question and we were basically confined to our houses.
Luckily, our garden is quite small and, with a bit of brute force and ignorance (climbing into the bin and jumping up and down to compress the contents!) we managed to survive until collections recommenced after a gap of eight weeks.
Like many things that have happened in the last three months, it’s amazing what we used to take for granted and only started to miss when it was taken away from us. Pubs, gyms, shopping and visiting friends and relatives are obvious but I never thought I’d miss seeing the chaps who emptied our green bin until they didn’t turn up for two months!!
