It has been a strange day with thick haar this morning, some sun then a prolonged thunder storm followed by warm sultry weather then more heavy rain and thunder late evening.  So it was not a good day for butterflies but one of those around today were the brown Ringlets.   Their wings have delicate white edges and pale ringed eye spots which confuse birds enabling them to escape.  "The spots actually reflect ultra-violet light (which birds can see and we can’t). The glowing spots look a lot like the eyes of a small mammal, which the birds are not interested in, so they leave the butterfly alone."
