Allotment border flowers

The borders surrounding our allotments are home to wild and cultivated flowering plants. These encourage bees of all types and other nectar and pollen feeding insects. In addition to pollinating the flowers in the borders these insects help to ensure that soft fruits and vegetables grown for their fruits ( eg peas, beans, courgettes and pumpkins) are pollinated leading to higher yield of quality produce. In addition many of the flowers are edible and make a welcome addition to salads and sweets.

If you look closely you’ll see a bumblebee collecting nectar and pollen from the cornflower.
