From a Distance

Not sure if this sign wound up in the River Kent due to someone making a political statement, or if it was just petty vandalism. Either way, it pretty much sums up current attitudes to social distancing.
I get the distinct impression people have decided that if they wear a mask, it in some way grants them total immunity from COVID to the extent they think nothing of crowding you in queues or in the shops. I lost count of the number of times today I was patiently waiting for someone to move down a supermarket aisle, yet many around me just pushed on through, often leaning right across the other person to grab something off the shelf. The situation was not helped by the large numbers of holidaymakers who were shopping “en famille”. I get that they need to get provisions for their self catering accommodation, but does the whole family really have to come in together? Just means less space for the rest of us - even more so when the kids get bored and wander away from mum and dad!
I don’t see the situation getting better any time soon. We are becoming complacent and it may sadly need a sudden upsurge in cases to jolt us out of that. At the very least, surely it couldn’t hurt to go back to being respectful and giving each other space - even if you do it whilst wearing a grubby mask under your chin!!
