We have this "water feature" by our front door which feels like a bit of an oxymoron. I think it's supposed to be soothing, but it's rather dark and brooding. The birds love it, and it's quite delightful to see lots of little goldfinches swooping in from the oak trees to bathe in it and drink from it. In an effort to soften it a bit, we put the stone balls from our Berkeley garden on there. (Rather, I put them in there because they were too heavy to carry any further, and somebody else arranged them.as they are now.) Peter, who is in middle school now but still has a lot of the little boy who likes to play with rocks in him, spent awhile placing little stones over the water so that it would shoot satisfyingly out over the entry path instead of dripping disconsolately down the side of the biggest rock. David's son Andrew, who had been helping David all day, reinterpreted it as it appears here--sort of an Andy Goldsworthy look.

We were talking about taking out the standing stones and replacing them with something friendlier, but now we're thinking we'll just wait and see how it evolves....
