A big hike!

With no lectures today, Luke decided to take the day off from studying and so we planned a big hike. After breakfast we got the gondola from the village up to the top of the mountain (2281m) and then set off to hike up Alp Cassanna. It's a very steep hike up a narrow path which gets quite stony with rocky precipes on either side. At times it was so steep that there was wire cable attached to the rock face to give support. This is the view after we had completed Alp Casanna and were about to walk up to another peak at Weissflujoch, and it does not look that steep in this image but the path takes you right along the rocky spine at the top which is quite challenging. In extras you can see the start of the hike, and also one of a cow. I find the cows here to be more aggressive than normal, maybe it's because at this time of year they have calves. Two years ago when we last walked here with Murdoch we were chased by cows, and today poor Xena had a scary encounter with some cows when they came after her but luckily she managed to run off in another direction and got away from them.

We finally got to Weissflujoch after going up, then down and up again to 2662m. Along the way we passed a large herd of Steinbok with babies (also known as bouquetin, Alpine Ibex or Capricorns) but I was not close enough to get some good photos. There are still some lovely Alpine wild flowers about, we saw Gentians, Bellflowers, Spiny Thistles, Asters, Monkshood, Moss Campion....to name a few.

We had lunch on the terrace of the mountain restaurant there, and then Gavin, Adam and I got the funicular down the mountain side to Davos and then the train back to Klosters. Adam had work to do so we got the train to save time and did not walk back home, but Luke and Meriel walked back and covered 25km today of up and down mountains. The boys are now playing golf! I am about to start cooking supper while Xena is sleeping after her busy day.
