Over and Under

I saw this banded snail making his way from the drive to the flower bed.  I think it fits today's theme of Over and Under for Mono Monday, hosted today by Black Tulip.

That was about the limit of my excitement  today.  We had a little walk after lunch then watched some tennis.

This particular snail has yellow stripes.  The colour and number of stripes is determined by genetics.  The same species of snail can vary from yellow to rose-coloured and brown. Equally some snails can have up to five stripes and some have none at all.

The colour depends on the environment they live in and the ability to camouflage itself from the song thrush.  A form of natural selection.

Thanks to Andy Beer and his book Every Day Nature.
