Dog walkers on the beach at Sandwich Bay

A very fine 10 mile circuit from the town of Sandwich along the coast of Sandwich Bay and back through the low-lying farmland slightly inland.

The weather was kind with largely clear skies along the coast, with more cloud inland sometimes hiding the sun. A cool north easterly breeze kept conditions just fine for walking.

We sat on the beach eating our Sandwiches watching the wildlife around us, skirmishes between adult and juvenile herring gulls then the intervention of a greater black backed gull caused a little consternation. Cormorants were patrolling up and down the shore, occasionally alighting on the water and diving. Small wading birds, probably dunlin were skittering around the water's edge.

It's quite true what Simon Barnes (Rewild Yourself 23 Spellbinding Ways To Make Nature More Visible) said that if you sit long enough looking out over the sea you become, just for the moment, part of the sea. That's what we found today.

The walk takes you past three golf links, The Princes, The Royal Cinque Ports and the Royal St, George's. All were extremely busy with groups of 5 seen on many holes.

The walk back to Sandwich was interesting in its own right, crossing drainage ditches with crystal clear water in them, filled with fish of all different sizes. We passed a field of onions being harvested which was a first for me.

All in all, a grand day out.
