Flock

The migratory birds are starting to arrive now the weather has cooled.

In Slimbridge WWT at the count today there were 400 wigeon which have arrived from Iceland, Russia and Siberia.  They are highly gregarious ducks which are resting this afternoon on the grasses of the mud-flats on the estuary of the River Severn. When they are disturbed as here they rise up together en masse keeping in tight formation with a rapid flight.

Up close the males especially have rather cute heads and beaks and I love hearing their distinctive 'whee-oo' call over the water.
