Loch Loyne

What a brilliant day we’ve had. Our wild camp near the Ice Factory was good though raining in the night.

We decided to take a walk SE on a bit of the West Highland Way, a walk from the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William. Had we had more time we’d have reached the Blackwater reservoir but we did get a good steep leg-stretch.

Then it was a beautiful drive along the loch and up to Fort William for a paper and fuel before the last pretty drive along Loch Garry and Glen Shiel, past Eilean Donan Caste to Skye.

Mr C stopped at the Willie MacRae memorial cairn. He had served as an ADC with Mountbatten in WW2. He was a lawyer, an SNP member and he opposed the nuclear industry wanting to dump waste in Galloway. His house was often mysteriously burgled and papers relating to this work removed. When he was working on the opposition to Dounraey dumping nuclear waste in the sea his car was found down a gully in 1985 and he died from his injuries A bullet was found in his head but no weapon was found at the scene at the time. His death was suspicious and after David Kelly was killed more people demanded an enquiry. Nothing happened. It is believed UK secret services were responsible. The Cairn is a lovely memorial.

As the weather was holding up we decided to take a detour down Glen Brittle to investigate the new parking for the Fairy Pools. We donated £8 to the council and headed off down the track. Even at 5 pm there were dozens of people on it. However it was impossible to cross the stepping stones due to the burn being in spate so we didn’t make it to the pools.

Now we are on a very nice site above Portree and it is raining steadily.

We’ve had a brilliant day and I took lots of potential blips but I chose this
