Common Enchantments

Farming

We had a long drive of 11 hours today and over 600 miles.  For most of the day it was cool and overcast until we got closer to where we would be stopping to spend the night.  It warmed up a little and the sun made a show through the gloom.  We had traveled through part of Indiana, Illinois, crossed the Mississippi River at St. Louis, traveled through Missouri and then into Kansas.   We are a little over half way through Kansas which is normally a seven hour trip from east to west.

In Kansas  we saw many, many, many fields of corn that had been cut down.  We also saw some green fields where a winter crop was coming up.  Hundreds of wind turbines, cows and more fields of something grown and cut that was not corn...maybe sorghum.   There are gazillions of acres farmed in Kansas.

I could see the dust way before we got close enough for me to take this photo.  From the dust I figured it was a farmer plowing a field so I was ready.   I tweaked the light just a little to give the silhouettes more definition but also so you could see the dust.  Very dry here.   You can see some wind turbines in the right corner.  They plant corn or whatever all around the turbines.

We also saw so many hawks on the fences and trees along the road.  Those were really hard to try to get a photo of as we were going too fast.

Tomorrow will be an 8 hour drive to my friends Sandy and Bill in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  We will be spending the night at their home and having a short visit.

Since neither of us slept well last night, we will be going to bed early!   Thanks for any comments and stars.
