Stuff and Nonsense

Greater Black Backed Gulls #81

Well, we couldn’t have timed today’s outings any better I don’t think, with the rain coming as we got back for lunch and then staying away whilst we had a walk on the sand later on.
This morning I needed a post office, so we drove to Seahouses and parked up for a couple of hours and went for a wander. This is where the boats for the Farne Islands depart from, but we didn’t fancy it, despite all the Covid safe precautions. We can wait until we return to see seal pups. Instead we walked past the harbour and started clamouring over rocks and seaweed and found loads of birds having a feast. There were lots of Dunlin, turnstones, ringed plovers, Redshank, oystercatchers, curlews, black headed gulls, a couple of herons and a couple of what I think were grey plovers. I did take some shots of the grey plovers hoping that they could be my blip for today and add to my annual bird blipping tally, but they were too far away. I’ll try and catch them later in the week now we know where to find them!
Whilst we walked the walls near the harbour there were more Eider ducks, which I love, cormorants diving and lots of gulls. This pair were on the opposite harbour wall and are Great Black Backed gulls(I think) and are our largest Gull species. In extras is a shot of the begging starlings which were mere feet away as you can see.

In the afternoon after the rain stopped, we went for a longer walk on the beach at Low Newton. The light was quite poor by this time but it was just so relaxing walking near the crashing waves and looking out for birds - the usual oystercatchers, turnstones and redshank were present in numbers with the odd Sanderling and Wagtail making an appearance. With Dunstanburgh castle in the distance and some early evening mist, it was a lovely couple of hours. A better than expected day for which we are very grateful.
