The Lozarithm Lens

Calne (Thursday 17th December 2020)

It was dark by the time I returned from my weekly shop, but I had previously noted this gleaming motorbike in the window of Calne garage, where Keith and Richard have looked after my i10, Archie. They had gone home so I was able to fire a flash at the window without drawing attention to myself.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Supremes - Going Down For The Third Time (Extended Mix) (band track recorded 1 June 1966, completed 21 June 1966, Hitsville Studio A, Detroit MI)
Most of my CD listening this week has been either the Vandellas or the Supremes. This was originally created for Martha and the Vandellas, but it seems they didn't record it and after being offered to the Elgins the Funk Brothers' backing track was used by Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard instead. They were augmented by the Andantes, but Flo's backing vocals come through strongly.
It is an especially bluesy song, designed more for Martha Reeves than Diane but she gives it a powerful attack. It sounds like single material but after appearing in 1967 on The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland  album it appeared in June 1967 on the B-side of Reflections.
I never heard the song until after I came across Phoebe Snow's version in 1976. It normally fades at 2:35 but this version is allowed to run on to the end and comes from a 2018 Expanded 2CD Edition of the original album.
