The green log

A birthday jaunt to Old Sulehay NR, but all was very quiet. It now feels like we're in the depths of winter - with the stark shapes of the leafless trees. But snowdrops and bluebells will soon be poking their shoots out of the soggy woodland leaf litter and bee orchid rosettes are already showing in the quarry. In the meantime, there are still mosses, liverworts and fungi to admire, as well as the wonderful colours of silver birch in midwinter (see extra).

In the evening I was treated to an a amazing home-cooked Indonesian meal, planned and orchestrated by Pete, but with input from all the family. It was much more of a feast than I'd expected, including a jackfruit curry, Gado-Gado salad, Nasi Goreng, chicken satay, an aubergine dish and two sambals. This was followed by a popular Indonesian dessert of fluffy pancakes served with a variety of accompaniments - apparently a favourite combination is condensed milk and cheese, which sounds odd but worked remarkably well! An evening to remember!
