A day in the life

Before snowfall

A friend of mine and me had some errands to do in the morning and after that we had decided to inspect the state of the ice in the bog-lake, Möckelmossen, close by. Of course we brought coffee and sandwiches too, this was also a walk over a small piece of Alvaret, a large plain on the south part of the island. The temperature was plus 2 degrees and we had an icy wind in our faces when we set out for our walk. Since it has been raining a lot during the last month there was a lot of water everywhere, with only a very thin layer of ice on top, which meant we couldn't walk very far. We found a sheltered place behind some juniper bushes for our coffee and headed for the car after that. As you maybe can see, the snow has started to fall just when we left and only twenty minutes later it was difficult to see a hundred metres ahead because of the whirling snow. We were lucky not to be a long way from the car, you don't want to be caught out here in this kind of weather, it's very easy to loose direction and as you can see there is no shelter. We weren't getting a lot of snow, only a few centimetres, but it doesn't take much to create problems when there is sudden strong winds about as well. All is well and there was never any danger but it was a good reminder of how quickly things can change.
