The Schuberts

By land, over the
mountains and on the river,
pioneers arrived!

~ carliewired

When gold was discovered in British Columbia in 1857, the gold rush began. People from all parts of the world began to arrive to seek their fortune.

In May 1862,  a group of 140 men arrived in Fort Garry (Winnipeg, Manitoba) determined to head for the gold fields of British Columbia. Augustus Schubert, a German carpenter, decided to join this group. His wife, Catherine, born in Ireland, decided that she and their three young children would go with him. Catherine was four months pregnant at the time and the only woman in the group of Overlanders when they began their trek across the prairies and through the Rocky Mountains. The group faced many hardships and dangerous adventures before arriving in British Columbia.

The Schuberts remained with a small group of Overlanders who decided to travel the North Thompson River on rafts they constructed. They arrived to Fort Kamloops on October 13, 1862. Catherine Schubert gave birth to her fourth child on the following day.

The Schuberts moved on to take part in the Caribou Gold Rush, living in Lillooet with Catherine supporting the family while Augustus prospected in Quesnel.
