There is such a thing as a free plant!

Another windy night tho’ it appears to be dying down now. I’m afraid that I decided against going for a walk and went downtown in the car instead as I had a few to things to collect.

Those of you who know Oban will be aware that the town has a public beach at Ganavan, on the north side of the town, approached by a narrow and winding coastal road. A few years ago, in the face of public opposition, the old pavilion was demolished and a number of large white houses erected, dominating the beach. The latest Development Plan shows a huge extension to the area, and a ‘Friends of Ganavan’ has been set up to oppose it. The council seems not to bother about the beach at all and the toilets are shut, making the family visits to this popular beach rather difficult. A local group, Adventure Oban, has volunteered to open and manage the facility until April, when presumably the council will get off its collective backside again.

We in Keep Oban Beautiful agreed to make up a couple of hanging baskets to enhance the entrance slightly, and a quick phone call to Homebase told me that they would be willing to donate a couple of baskets and some plants. Nothing very large, as the garden centre is practically empty, but it was a nice gesture, and not the first. Now we’ll have to find a way of securing the baskets to the railings so that the local yoofs don’t throw them into the sea!
