Surfing the wind

Another damp, breezy but mild day today - seems it's going to be like this for a while.  After lunch I went along to Ganavan Sands, Oban's beach, to meet a friend and walk around some of the areas which are planned for development. While I was waiting I was watching this lady putting her windsurfer together and hoped that I'd get a picture of her in action, but she was still sitting in her car when we left on our walk.

I didn't really get a picture of the area to be developed, but my extra might give some idea of part of it. The beach is just out of sight to the left and ahead is the shinty pitch which along with its surroundings is intended for some 190 houses. The area is surrounded on three sides by low hills, covered with birch, willow, oak, ash, hazel and gorse, and beyond this low ridge a great deal more housing is planned. The beach is already spoilt by a development of big houses and if the proposed new development goes ahead the wonderful wooded backdrop to the beach will be lost for ever. It's hard to imagine anyone in the Planning Department being brainless enough to even consider ruining Oban's only family beach. We're going to write a report for the Friends of Ganavan, though whether it will make an ounce of difference remains to be seen. We saw a couple of Black Grouse up there today which was a first for me.

Quote of the Day:

Oliver Wendell Holmes - "A hundred years after we are gone and forgotten, those who never heard of us will be living with the results of our actions.
