Supper guest

Mr.T visited me this evening for supper. He hasn't done that in over six months, since Corona has tied him to his home and illness and age has limited his mobility.

I had offered him supper today, as me and another neighbour has done in turns for the past few days since Friday when it was clear to us that he no longer could be trusted to make his own meals. During this last period of sun and mild temperatures I've been trying to lure him outdoor to get some sunshine but he has not had the energy. So, I was very surprised when he suggested to come and eat at my place, some 300 metres down the road. He hasn't walked that far in a very long time and was exhausted but proud when he got here. We had a good meal and some light conversation and it was so nice to be able to offer him a "normal" than he hasn't been used to in the past months. He stayed for over two hours, we had a cup of tea and even watched some tv. Then I followed him home and made sure he got in the house.

It made me think about how fragile we are in isolation and how much worse it can get when we no longer can trust our body to take us for walks and when it loses some of its functions. What happens when a hitherto active brain no longer gets challenged or stimulated? The last fourteen days has shown what that can do to someone.

He will now get help from the medical care and the councils various aids for the elderly so we hope he will live the rest of his 83 year old life in a more dignifying way.
It was so nice to see him relax and not having to worry about anything for a while.
