Wild Pear

After a much needed trip to Waitrose to re-stock the very bare fridge, I went for an afternoon walk round the Etton-Maxey pits. I was hoping to add a few birds to my year list, and did have distant and rather fleeting sightings of Little Ringed-plover and Shelduck, but mostly it was just lovely to walk along the recently established hedgerow, admiring the soft green of the unfurling leaves and a variety of bees and hoverflies on the blossom. The hedge was planted by Tarmac, and unusually contains several Wild Pear, which are just coming into bloom. I think this is one of the most beautiful types of blossom, with the rich purple anthers contrasting with the pure white blossom.
