Flat Holme Island

One of the benefits of being retired is that you can spend time doing what you enjoy, we love our walks along the Welsh coastal path and yesterday, we walked towards Barry and through the haze we could see Flat Holme Island about 5 miles out in the Bristol Channel.  Evidence has shown that it has been populated since the Bronze age. For many years it was used as a base by smugglers.  In 1737, a lighthouse was built here due to the number of ships being wrecked on the island.  In 1896, an isolation hospital was built there to house Cholera patients in an attempt to protect the city of Cardiff from the disease.  The very first wireless radio signals were sent from the Welsh mainland to Flat Holme by Marconi.   This tiny little island has an enormous history which I have only touched on, and I know that boat trips are available and once this pandemic is behind us, that is one of the places I intend to visit.
