Fish Market

Day 6 (February 28th) in the Galapagos on Santa Cruz Island. We spent today In Puerto Ayora, home to the Charles Darwin Research Center. The Center is very involved in attempting to preserve Giant Tortoises. The Tortoises are in danger from rats on Santa Cruz that eat their eggs. Eggs are harvested by the Center's staff and young Tortoises are raised at the Center before being returned to the wild. The rats, which were introduced into the Galapagos, demonstrate the danger to the flora and fauna of the Galapagos from introduced species. Fortunately, there is a plan to eliminate the rats.

The fish market in Puerto Ayora includes workers who fillet the fish and sea lions and brown pelicans that gather up all the scraps--an amazing site.
