At the End of the Runway

A tragic loss of
a young life is remembered
on this very day

~ carliewired

Our Canadian Snowbirds were here last year on their "Operation Inspiration", a fly-over Canada-wide to boost the spirits of Canadians during the pandemic.

As they took off on Sunday, May 17, 2020 from Kamloops' Fulton Field, one plane crashed in a Kamloops neighbourhood injuring the pilot and killing the Public Affairs Officer, Captain Jennifer Casey of Halifax, Nova Scotia. We were later to learn this crash was the result of a bird strike.

Immediately following the crash, the Kamloops community showed their caring and appreciation with a memorial display along the fence at the east end of the runway. Posters, flowers, Canadian flags and hearts decorated the length of the fence. Subsequently, there was a call to rename Airport Road as Capt. J. Casey Memorial Way.

The City of Kamloops has since approved a permanent memorial for Capt. Casey to be included in an observation park at the end of the runway. We don't yet know what that will look like.
