Buttercup meadows

We went to view the site earmarked for the allotments and to meet the councillors. Neither the Chair or the Chair of the Environment Committee came to talk to us. A couple of other councillors did, but their knowledge of the plan was the square root of zero.

It’s a beautiful place which would be an act of environmental vandalism to change its use to allotments. A huge area of grassland will be ploughed and half an acre of woodland will grubbed up all for allotments, extra tennis courts and a larger carpark.

The project will benefit just a few and is not environmentally sustainable. Turn it over to more woodland and a wild flower meadow which would result in greater biodiversity than even an allotment can provide. And of more value to a greater number of people. And a larger carpark? Why? More able bodied people need to walk or cycle.

All the parish councillors have now been emailed, the Borough councillors, the county councillor and the local newspapers. We’ll see what happens now.

By way of relaxation we went out onto the Greensand Way this afternoon to enjoy the lovely countryside south of Maidstone. Watched a cricket match, walked through orchards and meadows. It was idyllic.
