Hedge surveys

Today was spent surveying hedgerows in baking heat, a very apt activity in National Hedgerow Week. There was not much time to search for associated wildlife but we did also find a rather nice area of recently created wildlife grassland with masses of Grass Vetchling.

Once we'd finished our final hedge, Alex and I briefly visited the American Cemetery at Madingley (see extra). I found it a very poignant and peaceful place, with its carefully tended gardens and  curving rows of graves. The Memorial Chapel was interesting, with a wall display showing the locations where planes and ships had been lost in the war. However, I did find the juxtaposition of God and military might somewhat jarring...
