Not Cobblers / Nicht Lappers

This is Lappstrasse, which takes its name from Lappers, “tinkerers who were not allowed to make new shoes”.

So they were cobblers, traditionally restricted to making repairs - rather than cordwainers, who were allowed to make new footwear.

Cobblers made regular use of awls, the tool for making or enlarging holes in thick material, giving rise to the rhyming slang. I know what you’re thinking: what a load of cobblers!
