There's a comet out there somewhere....

Tonight, I braved the cold in an attempt to see comet designated C/2011 L4 Pan-Starrs. This comet is only visible in the UK for the next few days, as it travels away from the sun. Unfortunately, this means that it's also very close to the horizon at sunset. The guide I found to seeing it suggested finding the Moon (itself a barely-visble crescent) and then looking down towards the horizon 'about the width of your fist at arm's length'. Sadly, that meant that where the comet should have been, I could make out nothing in the general haze over London.
