Ramblings from Zambia....

baby ellies....

After being told schools were closed yesterday I was a bit fed up!  This morning I called the Elephant orphanage to see if they were open and they said yes!  So, off I set to visit the ellies.  I was there about a month ago and there were 6, today there were 4.  Two of them have graduated to the next stage of their rehabilitation in Kafue National park.  So there is one elephant today that is 3 years, one that is 2 years and two that are only 1 year and a few months and they were actually rescued together!

The keepers feed them every 3 hours and people are allowed to visit from a viewing platform only once a day.  The keepers are their mothers and are with them 24/7.  They get a bottle of milk and here the keeper was taking the bottle after the elephant had drunk it, and the elephant started screaming...it was hilarious!

Came home to the sad news that the founding father of Zambia passed away this afternoon.  Dr Kenneth Kaunda was the first President of Zambia and was a very gracious man.  He was 97 years old and for the next 21 days Zambia is in mourning!  A sad day for our country.
