Twinflowers

Another excellent day of botanising - the highlights were undoubtedly butterfly orchids and the rare beauty - twinflowers. The butterfly orchids appear annually in great abundance on land attached to a house aptly named 'Flower Field'.The orchids share this dry field with many other species including thyme and rock roses.

In the pine forest near Dell of Abernethy we paid what has become an annual pilgrimage to visit the dense carpet of tiny, delicate twinflowers modestly hanging their heads. Here and there dotted amongst the twinflowers were the larger white stars of chickweed wintergreen.

Later a visit to a disused railway line, the spectacularly edged with broom.
