Summer Roses

Summer has officially begun here with the Solstice. Longest day of sunlight of the year. The garden is buzzing & tweeting with life!

The rose featured today is a French antique called Louise Odier, popular in the 1800's. She smells marvelously. I admit I have neglected her for a couple of years and am pleased to see her blooming now. The yellowing in leaves make me think the plant would like some food.  A remarkably hardy rose who gets no special protection from our 6-month snowy winters.
I shall give Louise special feeding and attention this summer and an autumn mulch.
Extra is the very hardy Rosa Rugosa who is blooming without being eaten by Japanese beetles for a change. For some reason they have not arrived out of the soil this year. Time will tell. For the past few years they ate the flower petals at dawn just as they opened. I got none!
