Shornemead Fort

Today I took a walk through part of the rather run down looking industrial parts of east Gravesend and out onto the Saxon Shore Way along the River Thames.

Shornemead Fort is about 2 miles along the path to Higham village and was built in the 1860s as one of a string of forts protecting the Thames. It was in use up until the 1950s, and was partly demolished in the 1960s as an exercise by trainees of the Royal Engineers.  Today the remains of what was once a large edifice are slowly sinking into the mud and is covered in graffiti. Only the gun casements remain, with their submerged, inaccessible magazines below.
