Staring Contest

Lesson learned (again): carry a spare battery, especially when you know you're running low. My camera died just as I got the hawk in the viewfinder, so I had to pull out my phone and go for it. The bird was amazingly close, but not quite close enough to be without a zoom. I don't think the phone does grey days very well--everything seems so contrasty and dense. But here he is, one very disheveled damp hawk.

There was wet stuff coming out of the sky in the morning, and it stayed cold and overcast all day. True confessions: we put the heater on in the evening. Being warm is much nicer than being righteous.
