The Only Way Is Up

It has long been a source of annoyance that we have needed to use a WiFi extender kit to get the signal to all corners of the house - it’s only a two bedroomed bungalow, for God’s sake!! The problem is that the router sat right at the front of the house, by the BT socket, yet most of the kit (PC, iMac, printer, etc) is at the back of the house. Add in solid brick walls throughout and there wasn’t a strong enough signal reaching the study. Hence the need for the extender to boost the signal. For some unknown reason though, the iMac (and laptop) would not talk to the printer via the extender so Mrs C had to email anything she wanted printing to me, as my PC could connect to the printer - not convenient! We tried a BT socket extension and moved the router into the study. All that meant was that the “smart” functions of the telly didn’t work properly! And the cable - which had to run under the carpet - soon failed due to being continually walked over! The only solution was to put the router in the loft - strong signal wherever you were in the house - but that would have meant channeling out the wall and putting a hole in the ceiling to route the ADSL cable. However, during discussions with the joiner last week, it was decided to line the alcove in the lounge with wooden panels. So I can run a cable behind them, and up into the loft, without chiselling holes in the walls.
I duly purchased 15M of the appropriate cable and made a hole in the ceiling at the top of the alcove. Well, several holes actually, as I came up in the wrong place (too close to a noggin) on the first two attempts!! But all is in place now. A full strength WiFi signal is available in every room. No ugly router on display and a WiFi extender kit to be sold at the next car boot sale. And the dangling cable and holes in the ceiling will soon be concealed by some nice oak panels.
