View from the lake

This morning the weather was threatening, but it turned out to be much better than expected. We took the ferry up the lake to Ambleside to join the hordes of tourists. This photo was taken looking North towards the Langdale Pikes. The peak on the left is Pike O'Stickle, and to the right is Harrison Stickle. In the foreground is Wray Castle. It was built as a fanciful idea 180 years ago by a surgeon and an heiress from Liverpool. It has never had to defend itself against anything but the weather.

After lunch we did a fairly short walk up past Rydal Hall and back into Ambleside. Today's first extra is of the view from the top of 'Nook Lane' (for those who are familiar with the area) down the valley towards Rydal. We have never wandered up this little lane before, so it was a pleasant surprise when it opened out onto such a splendid view.
The second extra was taken waiting for the return ferry in Ambleside.
It's the first time in quite a few years that we have visited Ambleside in the summer season. Normally we visit in October or November when it is much quieter. I think I still prefer the place out of season.
