Shallow

Surrounded by wonderful scenery all day, I'm shallow enough to say that today's highlight was one of these "cake fridges". These are repurposed fridges, full of goodies and with an honesty box, and apparently are quite a thing here.

Still pretty dreary weather so we had a late coffee in Lerwick (no early risers here after last night's lateness) and then on to the Shetland Textile Museum. Interesting info and displays, my favourite being the collage of hats (extra).

Fellow blipper Bodkin mentioned Da Gardains a couple of weeks ago so we headed out there. I had a long chat with the owner who was clad in boiler suit and anti- midge gear and happy to tell us all about the place. A great wander round an inspiring place which is a mixture of wild and cultivated, but the flies persuaded us not to linger as long as we had planned.

L and I had a good evening walk down to the local harbour to look for the three seals that hang around waiting for leavings of the boats. We saw one, and it was definitely just waiting for his own version of a cake fridge!!!

Oh, and a quick mention of last night's Mousa trip to see Storm Petrels. It was wonderful. No other way to describe it. The birds were unfazed about our presence, starting to arrive just before midnight in increasing numbers, circling the ancient Mousa broch a few times at great speed before disappearing into the stonework. Apparently, they're also under the stoney beach and in the dykes (we heard them chirring away on our return walk; walls have ears indeed as they went quiet as soon as nosey people started trying to peep in)(incidentally, why do that and disturb them?). Anyway, thoroughly recommended if you ever get the opportunity.
