Sgwarnog: In the Field

Saxifrage

A fine day for a walk up Pen-y-ghent.

16yo and I caught the train out to Horton in Ribblesdale and walked up via the southern nose of the peak (extra). We stayed up on the ridge along to Plover Hill before descending down to the bridleway known as Foxup Road and heading west back along the valley to the village.

There were lots of expedition groups on the fell: army, sixth formers all burdened by large packs, but there were plenty of times where it was quiet and peaceful and we had long stretches to ourselves.

It was a fairly quiet day for butterflies, although there were Small Heath all over the hill and I saw a single Small White and my first Dark Green Fritillary of the year. There was plenty of spectacular flora though, of which this patch of Yellow Mountain Saxifrage which was beside the path on the steep descent from Plover Hill was a highlight.

Thankfully a cafe was open when got back to the village, so some well earned refreshment got us ready for our journey home.
