Chihuly!

Monday
We arrived in Seattle just in time for their record heat wave - yesterday was in the mid 90s F, and today it was heading up to 107F! We had tickets this morning for the Space Needle at 10 am, and following for Chihuly garden and glass which is adjacent. On the way there, we passed the Amazon Spheres (centre top in extra collage). The Space Needle, (see right photos in extra collage) an icon of Seattle, was built In 1962 for the World’s Fair, and stands at 605 ft tall. The highlight of the day for me was the Chihuly museum. I have come across his work in several locations, but seeing so much of his art in one place was a real treat. Dale Chihuly was born in nearby Tacoma Washington, and is an amazing glass artist, having installations around the world. The museum showcasing his work comprises eight interior galleries, a glasshouse and a garden serving as a backdrop for his work. By the time we had finished with these two locations it was early afternoon, and feeling really hot. Unfortunately, being a Monday, the Art museum was closed, otherwise that would have been a good place to go to escape the heat for a few hours. Instead, we stuck with our original plan of walking down to the Sculpture Park on the waterfront. We found some seats in the shade and sat and enjoyed the view for a while, then Laura and I continued on exploring, leaving Roger sitting in the shade. By this time, we decided we’d had enough, and our water was getting low, so we headed back to the cool of the hotel for a couple of hours before dinner.
