This magpie youngster sought refuge on the bench outside the window as an adolescent crow tried to peck it to death. I have seen the crows try to attack the squirrels but not been at the scene of a murder in broad daylight of a bird on bird.

I came to the magpie’s rescue by opening the door and yelling. They both flew off to a very leafy tree- I hope the young magpie lives to see another day.

This morning we had what might just be the last of our book group’s Zoom meetings. The next meeting will be face to face in the Dower House in September and it will be a morning rather than an evening gathering. We are all getting a bit long in the tooth to be stravaiging about Edinburgh in the dark nights of winter especially as some of us have downsized and are outwith the original small area we all once inhabited. The only disadvantage is that cakes will have to be baked.
