Face of Nijmegen

A new landmark for the city of Nijmegen; it's a big creation made by the artist Andreas Hetfeld, who realised this 5 by 6 meters large sculpt of a Roman mask. The original mask was found one hundred years ago in the river De Waal, what runs here along the city of Nijmegen. That mask once belonged to a Roman soldier (to protect his face when in combat) who was stationed here 2000 years ago, when the Romans also occupied the Netherlands (the river Rhine was their Northern border, so they came up to Leiden and a little further up to the coast of Katwijk).

I marvel this new landmark, what's here since April 2020 ~ in the extra one gave it its eye :-)

Happy Weekend to you all!
