Dikes, water and seals

The coasts of Zeeland are the most beautiful.  Most towns with a longer history are recognizable by remnants of the city walls and the elongated market square that seem to connect to the harbour.  As if the harbour had ever continued on, where the square is now. The polders are flat and boring.

The Western Scheldt is an estuary in the Dutch province of Zeeland.  It is not closed like the other estuaries so that the port of Antwerp remains accessible.  Cycling along the cycle path between the dike and the water, we saw the port of Antwerp and the nuclear power station near the village of Doel where we cycled two years ago. And we saw seals!

Close to Woensdrecht, were we ordered pancakes in a restaurant, we could clearly see the Brabant Wall. This is a long ridge, probably formed by the river Scheldt. On the side of the Scheldt, a steep wall, sometimes up to 20 meters high, is very characteristic.
